Artist @ Helzart Gallery

Creating landscapes, seascapes & pet portraits!
There's much to see here. So grab a coffee, take your time, look around, and learn all there is to know about me as an artist. I hope you enjoy the site and take a moment to drop me a line.
As a baby boomer born in the 60’s I was fortunate enough to grow up in Tasmania where the beauty of nature abounds. I’m a self taught artist who finds inspiration for my artwork from the beauty and colours of nature. My journey started as a child when I spent countless hours watching my mother paint beautiful landscapes in oils and I would try to replicate her work with my coloured pencils. (Never quite looked the same tho)! I guess you could say a dabbled with art off and on over the years with life and travel getting in the way. It’s only the last few years I have taken a more serious approach as my passion for my art has grown. My works are created on canvas utilising acrylic and oil paints however I also get great pleasure doing pet portraits in pastel and coloured pencil on various papers. I love working with acrylics but oils and pastels are my preferred mediums.
My art has developed tenfold in the past couple of years with focus on improving my skills and techniques. I enjoy learning from and sharing techniques with other artists and am a member of the Launceston Art Society where I participate in exhibitions and workshops to help broaden my horizons. I love experimenting with different genres and mediums and am working towards becoming a full time artist. I have a purpose built studio\gallery on my property which will be ideal for exhibitions in the future.
So what lies ahead…..continue to take inspiration from nature to produce beautiful works of art that will bring a touch of happiness into peoples lives.
I use a variety of mediums to produce my artworks such as acrylics, oils, flow acrylics, coloured pencils, graphite pencils and pastels. I believe that working in a single medium is restrictive to my artistic process and utilise a variety of quality brand names in my pallette. Selecting the right additive to enhance the paint and technique plays an important role in achieving the desired effect on the canvas; each media manifests in its own individual characteristics contributing to the desired finish and texture of the completed artwork.
Living in beautiful Tasmania I am never short of inspiration. I am very passionate about animals and nature and have always said it is easy to paint or draw something you love. I often find myself walking one of Tasmania’s beautiful beaches with my two dogs with camera in hand building a library of reference photos later transformed into seascape and landscape paintings. I also get inspiration from my garden getting great pleasure painting trees and flowers. I like to have a break from the brushes every now and then and do a pet portrait in pencil, after all, that’s where my artistic journey started many moons ago.
